Ogun 2027: Perjury Scandal Rocks Yayi's Ambition as Hunye's Legal Aide Issues Fresh Warning to APC

 

The legal battle surrounding the 2027 Ogun State governorship contest has taken a fresh turn, with the legal adviser to All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye, accusing the party’s candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, of allegedly making contradictory declarations in sworn electoral documents.

The lawyer, Mr Victor Olamide, said the issue before the court was not simply a dispute over Adeola’s ancestry or state of origin, but whether the senator had made materially inconsistent declarations in official documents submitted under oath at different stages of his political career.

His comments came amid Adeola’s threat of legal action against Hunye and former Nigerian Ambassador Folake Marcus-Bello over claims concerning his alleged Ekiti ancestry. Adeola had challenged his accusers to produce evidence or face lawsuits.

Olamide, however, maintained that the appropriate place to resolve the controversy was the courtroom, where sworn documents and other evidence could be examined.

“We are not challenging the indigenship of Senator Solomon Adeola; we are saying he has committed perjury,” the lawyer alleged.

According to him, the Hunye legal team was interested in examining declarations allegedly made by Adeola during his earlier political career, particularly documents connected with his elective positions in Lagos State before his subsequent political activities in Ogun.

The lawyer questioned whether Adeola had consistently supplied the same information concerning his state of origin and other personal particulars in his various electoral declarations.

“On your INEC form, you must swear an oath that everything provided is true. If you held elective office in Lagos State since 2003 and filled out sworn declarations, which state did you claim in those previous forms? Was it Ekiti, Lagos or Ogun State?” Olamide asked.

He argued that if the relevant documents eventually showed materially contradictory declarations, the issue would become a matter for judicial determination.

“If he claimed another state in those sworn declarations and is now claiming Ogun State, that constitutes perjury under our laws,” he alleged.

The lawyer challenged Adeola to abandon what he described as media exchanges and take the matter before the court.

“Rather than issuing 24-hour ultimatums and grandstanding on national television, Senator Adeola should prepare to defend his sworn declarations and submit his credentials for full judicial scrutiny in open court,” he said.

Adeola had, through his media adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro, given Hunye and Marcus-Bello 24 hours to produce evidence backing claims about his alleged Ekiti origin or face legal action. Adeola described the allegations as false and defamatory.

Hunye subsequently welcomed the threatened lawsuit, insisting that he was prepared to defend his position in court and that documentary evidence would be presented if the matter came before the judiciary.

In another contentious claim, Olamide warned that Adeola could become a “political flight risk” to the APC if the party proceeds with his candidacy without adequately addressing the various legal controversies surrounding him.

The lawyer alleged that the senator was carrying “a lot of baggage” in the form of legal disputes and controversies which, he claimed, could be exploited by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2027 campaign.

“We are saying that if the APC allows Senator Adeola to proceed into the 2027 governorship election without resolving these issues, he may become a political flight risk to the party,” Olamide said.

He alleged that the opposition could make the pending legal controversies a major campaign issue, particularly if questions surrounding Adeola’s eligibility, origin and previous declarations remain unresolved.

The controversy over Adeola’s eligibility has already generated litigation and competing claims from political actors. In September, the Ogun chapters of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and BOOT Party also denied claims that they had withdrawn legal challenges concerning Adeola’s candidacy and state-of-origin questions.

Meanwhile, the PDP’s 2027 governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and Marcus-Bello have publicly challenged Adeola to pursue his threatened legal action over the disputed origin claims.

Olamide said the Hunye camp was prepared to allow the courts to determine the authenticity, meaning and legal consequences of any conflicting documents that may be presented.

He stressed that the legal process should take precedence over political statements, adding that any allegation of perjury must ultimately be established through the appropriate judicial process.

The latest development adds another layer to the growing political and legal contest within Ogun APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with the competing camps now preparing to test their claims through litigation and documentary evidence.

The political landscape of Agege Constituency II has taken a dramatic turn ahead of the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election, following the emergence of Barrister Azeez Oladapo Yusuf, popularly known as Ninolowo or Nino Agege, as the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate for the constituency.

Behind Ninolowo’s emergence under a new political platform lies a story that has generated intense conversation across Agege  the story of what his supporters describe as a “stolen mandate,” a mandate they insist was freely secured by Ninolowo at the May 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly primary before his name was subsequently removed from the party’s final candidate list.

The circumstances surrounding the primary have continued to fuel the controversy. On May 20, 2026, reports announced Azeez Ninolowo as the winner of the APC primary for Agege Constituency II, with 12,455 votes, while Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi was reported to have won Agege Constituency I with 10,126 votes.

The declaration appeared to settle the contest. Ninolowo had won the primary, his supporters celebrated, and the expectation was that he would proceed as the APC candidate for Agege Constituency II in the 2027 election.

However, what followed changed the entire political narrative. Reports from June indicated that supporters protested at the Lagos APC secretariat, demanding that the votes they believed were cast for Ninolowo and Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi be respected.

The controversy eventually culminated in Ninolowo’s departure from the APC. Multiple reports published in September 2026 confirmed that Ninolowo and Egunjobi subsequently secured APM tickets for Agege Constituencies II and I respectively. APM’s substitution primary for Constituency II reportedly produced Yusuf as its candidate.

Ninolowo and Egunjobi have publicly rejected suggestions that their movement to APM was orchestrated by Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. In a statement reported by PUNCH, the duo said the decision was independently taken after what they described as their experience during the APC candidate-selection process and unsuccessful efforts to resolve their grievances within the party.

For Ninolowo, therefore, the 2027 contest is no longer simply about changing political platforms. It represents a new chapter in an already established relationship with the Agege community, where he has built visibility through philanthropy, community interventions and grassroots engagement.

Earlier in 2026, when he declared his intention to contest for Agege Constituency II, Ninolowo described his ambition as a call to public service rather than a pursuit of personal gain. He pledged to use legislative representation to champion community development while continuing his charitable activities.

His philanthropic profile has been one of the most frequently highlighted aspects of his public activities. Reports have associated him with scholarships, support for indigent residents, medical outreach and assistance to people at the grassroots. His April 2026 declaration followed a medical outreach at Orile-Agege, underscoring the community-service narrative around his political ambition.
 

The legal practitioner and businessman has consequently attempted to present himself as a candidate whose relationship with Agege predates electoral calculations. The central question for Constituency II residents in 2027 will be whether that history of community engagement translates into the kind of legislative representation they expect from their elected representative.

That question becomes particularly important because the Lagos State House of Assembly is not merely a platform for political visibility. Constituency representatives participate in legislation, oversight of the executive, representation of constituents and advocacy for projects and policies affecting their communities.

Ninolowo’s supporters can therefore point to his background outside formal politics as part of the argument for his candidacy. His legal training, business experience and years of community involvement provide elements of a profile that he can bring into the legislative contest. Reports have previously described him as a lawyer, entrepreneur and philanthropist with business interests spanning different sectors.

The 2027 contest will also require more than personality or philanthropy. Agege Constituency II voters will ultimately have to examine the candidates’ positions on issues such as infrastructure, education, youth employment, skills development, healthcare, environmental sanitation, security, transportation and effective constituency representation.

The political significance of Ninolowo’s APM candidacy is therefore difficult to separate from the circumstances surrounding his departure from APC. His supporters regard the move as a continuation of their preferred candidate’s political journey, while the APC retains its own candidate for the constituency. Reports identify Enimakure Akindele Sakiru as the APC candidate for Agege II.

The development has consequently transformed Agege Constituency II into one of the constituencies attracting attention ahead of the 2027 Lagos Assembly election. Ninolowo’s switch has introduced a new political platform, a new campaign narrative and a direct contest between a politician who previously sought the ruling party’s ticket and the candidate now carrying that party’s flag.

For Ninolowo, the challenge is now clear: to convince constituents that the APM platform can provide an effective vehicle for his legislative ambition and that his record of community engagement can translate into measurable representation.

For the voters, the issue is equally clear the 2027 contest provides an opportunity to scrutinise the competing candidates, their records, programmes and capacity for constituency service.

What makes Ninolowo’s story particularly compelling is that his political journey has moved from an internal party contest to a wider electoral battle before the people of Agege Constituency II. State Leadership Directs LG/LCDA Coordinators to Present Letters Ahead of Strategic Campaign Rollout  

The Lagos Chapter of the CityBoy Movement, a key youth and grassroots mobilization structure of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has commenced the formal distribution of Congratulatory Letters to all APC candidates contesting for elective offices in the 2027 general elections across Lagos State.

In a directive issued by the State Director, Hon. Moyosore Ogunlewe, Esq., the Movement confirmed that letters addressed to candidates for the offices of Deputy Governor, Senator, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly have been duly issued and channeled through the Office of the CityBoy LG/LCDA Coordinators for onward presentation.

According to the statement, the congratulatory gesture is in recognition of the candidates who have emerged to fly the APC flag and as part of the Movement’s commitment to early engagement, unity, and strategic alignment ahead of the 2027 polls.

Hon. Ogunlewe enjoined all State Executives, LGA Supervisors, LGA Secretaries, LGA Directors of Mobilization, and LG/LCDA Coordinators to work collaboratively as a team to ensure the prompt and dignified presentation of the letters to the respective candidates within their constituencies.

To ensure proper documentation and visibility, all coordinating teams have been mandated to capture clear photographs and video clips of each presentation exercise. The media materials are to be shared immediately on the official CityBoy Lagos Group platform. In addition, all acknowledged copies of the letters are to be returned to the CityBoy State Headquarters for record purposes.

The State Director emphasized that the entire exercise is expected to be fully completed on or before Friday, 11th September 2026. This timeline, he noted, will enable the leadership to proceed promptly with the rollout and implementation of other strategic campaign activities and mobilization plans mapped out for the chapter.

“This is the first phase of our engagement with all our flag bearers. It sets the tone for deeper collaboration, grassroots penetration, and voter mobilization as we move toward 2027,” Hon. Ogunlewe stated. “We are calling on all stakeholders to treat this assignment with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.”
